Harsh Lesson for Wroxham Youngsters

Harsh Lesson for Wroxham Youngsters

lisa hamilton14 Oct 2015 - 13:02

Wilkinson's young Yachtsmen were served their worst defeat in seasons against a determined Dereham side

Managers Mark Wilkinson and Russell Barnes had to deliver a blistering half-time team talk after possibly one of the worst first half performances seen from the young Wroxham side for a very long time.

The first half kicked off very quickly with both teams fighting for the win but Dereham took the first corner after keeper Warren Burwood skimmed a shot wide, the corner was cleared quickly. Wroxham responded well and in the 8th minute a good throw in from Ed Abery fell to Angus Mackie who neatly turned to slot the ball to Alex Jary to smash the ball into the back of the net past a helpless Dereham keeper Child.

This fired up the Dereham side who stepped up the pace and for the rest of the half they piled on the pressure turning the Wroxham lads inside out and led to a run of goals from Dereham. Sam Long scored the first on 10 minutes followed by a break for Wroxham as a shot skimmed across the crossbar on 19 minutes. Jack Lincoln had one shot for Wroxham which keeper Crisp had to make a fingertip save to stop, but then it was chance after chance for Dereham with the Wroxham lads seeming to just look bemused at what was happening. Goals from Lewis Rivetts, James Cooper and Kieren Robins brought the score to 4-1 before Wroxham were awarded a free-kick after Jary was brought down in the box, the kick came to nothing however with Child easily gathering.

Just before half-time Cooper added his second and Dereham's 5th.

Half-time: Wroxham 1, Dereham 5.

Managers Wilkinson and Barnes went into the changing rooms and delivered a harsh dressing down to the lads and asked for a much improved performance in the second half. A tactical move was to.remove under-used wingers Jary and Lincoln and bring on Luke Holland and Tommy Knight. The two substitutes quickly made an impression with Holland making some great defending decisions and Knight caused an instant upset for the Dereham defence. He justly scored a good goal after 49 minutes from a free-kick. Wrexham overlooked a much better side and the one we are more familiar with seeing with Mackie skimming the crossbar and Toby Tye causing plenty of problems for Dereham's defence. They thought they'd made it 3 goals on 59 minutes but the ball was deemed to have not crossed the line.

Burwood was called on still to make some good saves from a few corners by Dereham then Adam Wilson replaced Josh Gathergood bringing on some fresh legs in the 67th minute. Child was kept busy saving well from a Bradley Spooner shot then Burwood at the other end was called into action with corners from Dereham. A Dereham player then received a nasty injury and was stretchered off. This must have changed Wroxham's pace as Dereham scored from the resulting penalty and straight after added a 7th. Spooner then had a shot skim Dereham's crossbar before a very dubious refereeing decision saw Alex Philpott receive a yellow card for handball. Rivett scored from the free-kick making the final score 8-2 to Dereham.

This was a big lesson for Wroxham in adapting their style of play and learning to stand up more against more physical sides. Managers Wilky and Barnes were happier with the second half performance and hope that it was a wake up call for the lads that sometimes they need to change their play to suit conditions and not always rely on having a good ability at football. It is hoped they come out this Thursday with a stronger mentality and get back to winning ways.
