The Young Yachtsmen make it a double over Gorleston

lisa hamilton1 Nov 2015 - 18:18

Back to Back wins give Wroxham u18s all six points against previous table-topping team Gorleston

Knowing it was going to be another tough match against the lively Gorleston Wroxham started very lively and in the first five minutes of the game looked to be on top. Alex Jary had the first real shot on goal but it came to nothing with Robbie Turner shooting over on 8 minutes. They were looking for a goal and on 9 minutes this came from Alex Jary. Not to be outdone Gorleston then caused panic in the Wroxham box with keeper Dirk Dougdale and Toby Tye both misjudging the Gorleston attempt on goal, causing the Wroxham defence concern until Luke Holland managed to clear the ball to safety.

Gorleston's Connor Ingram was causing problems and Dugdale had to pull off a good save on 12 minutes but then on 14 minutes was pulled up for a caution with Gorleston awarded a penalty. Hitman Ingram stepped up to blast past the helpless Dugdale levelling the score.

Wroxham then stepped up the pace, a corner by Bradley Spooner gave Jary a good chance to score with a Gorleston defender touching it wide. Jack Lincoln broke free and made a crazy run through the Gorleston defence to see keeper Sam Freestone knock it clear as far as Spooner who made no mistake with the rebound to gain Wroxham the lead again on 14 minutes. Lincoln was now on fire and determined to beat the keeper making another good run to see his shot well-saved by Freestone. Josh Gathergood played well to bring the ball to the Gorleston area, but the Wroxham attack failed to get a decent shot at goal.

On 36 minutes Lincoln finally got his goal, breaking clear through the Gorleston defence and curling a lovely ball into the back of the net. Turner then got into the actiondriving through the defence with the final touch by Lincoln well saved by Freestone. Gathergood passed a great ball to Tommy Knight who cleverly slid through to Jary, his touch to Spooner saw Spooner shoot at the keeper for another save.

Just before half-time Lincoln tried another great shot which Freestone punched clear, Turner shooting over from rebound. Gorleston then created havoc at the other end with two corners, The tackling well and Dugdale saving to keep the Yachtsmen in the lead as the whistle blew for the break.

Half-time: Wroxham 3, Gorleston 1.

Wilkinson introduced changes on 59 minutes giving a run out to Tom Rampling, Adam Wilson and Aiden Wickham replacing Knight, Spooner and Jary. Lincoln then hit the post a minute later with Rampling almost making it 4 on 63 minutes. Steve Kidd replaced Lincoln on 64 minutes and soon made an impression, his cross shot just wide by Wilson. Trampling broke clear on 71 minutes but saw Kidd shoot wide. A very was brought down outside the Gorleston box but the free-kick was well defended by Gorleston. The Wroxham defence was made to work hard a minute later with a good corner by Gorleston.

Ingram was again causing problems for Wroxham and Charlie Orchard - who rejoined Gorleston from Wroxham during the week - also kept the Wroxham defence busy. They had a free-kick on 81 minutes which hit the post, Dugdale punching clear from the rebounded shot. There continued to be chances at both ends right up til the final whistle, but Wroxham ended up the victors with all three points.

Manager Russell Barnes was delighted with the result. "This was a far better game in terms of possession and work rate off the ball with some far calmer play on the ball. The lads are now starting to play some very good football and developing well as a team. We look forward to the next game and hope this standard continues."

The next game is away at Harford, with fireworks guaranteed - well it is November the 5th!

The team wish Charlie Orchard all the best with the rest of the season at Gorleston and thank him for his time with the club. Good luck Charlie.
