After an excellent performance last week the management team were looking for another good display. They opted again for the 3-5-2 formation that worked so well against Diss.
This was Wroxham's first visit to Beccles being as they are one of the new teams to join the league, so managers Mark Wilkinson and Russell Barnes started with a very strong line-up with last week's 10-goal scorers all kicking off the game.
Beccles started off stronger causing the Wroxham defence a few problems with plenty of early pressure on the defence, however on 10 minutes a shot by Rob Turner deflected off a Beccles defender to just go wide. This led to a period of pretty frantic end-to-end play with both sides looking to get the first goal. Jack Lincoln sent in a beautiful cross on 15 minutes but there were no players in the box to take advantage. Alex Jary then floated in a cross which Alex Philpott headed straight into the keepers arms.
Wroxham then stepped up the pressure with Turner shooting high over on 17 minutes, but making up for it on 18 minutes slotting home Wroxham's opener. Not wanting to be outdone Alex Jary fired home a glorious second just a minute later. On 25 minutes Beccles responded with a good shot defended well by Philpott, the rebound going wide. A minute later a fumble by Beccles keeper Billy Johnson was pounced on by the waiting Angus Mackie who slid the ball in for number three.
With a good lead the managers felt it was time for a shuffle and brought on Steven Kidd for Mackie and Will Bennett for Turner, Kidd instantly making a good impression. Beccles then pressured the Wroxham defence causing Philpott and Josh Gathergood to pull off some excellent defending. Tommy Knight then put on a lovely show with some neat footwork almost producing goal four, but Bradley Spooner chipped Knight's pass into Johnson's arms. Philpott again cleared danger from Beccles on 38 minutes.
On the 40th minute keeper Warren Burwood misjudged his goal kick, hit Beccles' Will Webb with the rebound trickling over the line to give Beccles their first goal. Both teams then created chances before Knight got taken down in the Beccles box. Knight coolly stepped up to the spot to take the resulting penalty and smashed the ball into the top left hand corner on 43 minutes. Happy to get on the scoresheet he then doubled his tally a minute later slotting home past Johnson. The half finished with Burwood pulling off a good save to deny Beccles a last minute goal.
Half-time: Beccles 1, Wroxham 5.
A trio of substitutions at half-time saw Aiden Wickham replace Adam Wilson, Toby Tye replace Luke Holland and Ben Riley replace Spooner. The second half started off at a more settled pace than the first, with plenty of passing in the midfield. Philpott impressing in particular with his command of the team - showing his worth as team captain directing from the back. Lincoln too was catching the eye with some quality play. As the game got a bit complacent Turner and Mackie returned to the pitch replacing the outstanding Lincoln and Knight adding some fresher legs to the mix.
Burwood made another good save in the 63rd minute, then Kidd seemed to take on the entire Beccles defence weaving in and out before passing back to Wilson whose blistering shot forced Johnson to tip over. From the corner a diving header from Beccles' Alfie Wright unfortunately gifted Wroxham their sixth goal on 73 minutes. Mackie and Turner both competed to try snatch a seventh, both coming close but seeing their efforts skim the post. Both teams never stopped battling right to the final whistle but Wroxham came out on top with a 6-1 victory. All credit to a young but hard-working Beccles team who look a competitive addition to the league. Look forward to their visit at Trafford Park.
Managers were delighted with the lads. Wilkinson said: "What a good outstanding performance by the whole squad. Every single one of them played a huge part and I'm very pleased by tonight's result".
Barnes reiterated this saying: "I am really pleased with the performance. All of the players that came in had good games and did themselves real credit. The team is really starting to fire now and you can see them coming together and gelling well".
Next week the youngsters take the long trip to Long Melford for their first FA Youth Cup fixture with a real headache for the management team over team selection after everyone played like they did tonight.
