Wroxham sail on in FA Cup

Chris Green26 Aug 2012 - 12:43

The FA Cup draw always produces coincidental and ironic events and this tie would be one of those. Wroxham, one of the sides promoted to the Ryman League and Great Wakering Rovers, who were relegated from the Ryman, back to the Essex Senior League.

John Allen.......Reporting from Trafford Park.

Rovers disposed of Woodbridge Town in the last round
winning 2-1 away at Nottcuts Park and come to
Trafford Park this afternoon on the back of a 6-2
win over Hullbridge Sports in the ESL League cup
on Tuesday evening.

After two Ryman League defeats Wroxhan remain
pointless but both games were close, hard-fought
affairs, the Yachtsmen going down 1-2 at Potters bar
and 0-1 at home to Witham Town on Tuesday evening.

David Batch's side were looking to kick-start their
season by progressing to the next round of the FA Cup
this afternoon.

Only one change was made from the Wroxham
starting line up that lost to Witham on Tuesday, Josh
Turner coming in for Danny Self who has a broken hand.

The first goal-bound attempt of this match would fall
to Wroxham striker Paul Cook eight minutes into
the Tie. Halliday's long ball to the edge of the Gt Wakering
penalty area found Cook who bustled past three
defenders before firing his shot across Godwin's
goal.

On ten minutes Gt Wakering forced a corner,
Webb's in-swinging kick punched clear by Hilton
in the Wroxham goal. Moments later Hilton would be under less pressure
as he watched Rovers full-back Drury's long range
effort sail wide.

Daniels and Turner then had shooting attempt's blocked for the Yachtsmen, as the home side began to take control.

Halliday then found Cook who's deflected shot was turned round the post by Gt Wakering keeper Godwin for a Wroxham corner. Lemmon's kick found the head of Hipperson who's powerfull header was cleared off the line.

On 24mins the mounting Wroxham pressure brought it's reward.

Again, a Lemmon corner kick met with the head of Hipperson who was fouled in the Wakering box to give Wroxham a penalty kick.

Daniels stepping up to calmly place the ball in, off the post of Godwin's goal.

Hipperson was involved moments later as he and Carus had a mix-up in defence to present a striking oppertunity to Gt Wakering's Webb,
Hipperson doing well to recover and clear Webb's shot off the line.

On the half-hour the persistant Webb sent in a telling free-kick met by the head of Rovers centre-half Hepburn who's header was well saved by Hilton in the Wroxham goal.

On 36 mins Wroxham went 2-0 up. Shots by Daniels, Turner, then Daniels again were blocked, the ball then fell to Matt Blake rounding a defender before fireing home.

It was all Wroxham now and Rovers had their man of the match Webb to thank for easing the pressure on 40mins driving down the left flank
before sending in two good crosses that were well defended by Carus and Eastaugh.

On the stroke of half-time good approach work by the busy Daniels set up a scoring opportunity for Cook but the Wroxham target
man pulled his shot wide.

The second half began as the first had ended with the Yachtsmen looking to add a third goal.

On 50mins more good running by Daniels was followed by shot from the edge of the box which went narrowly wide of the Wakering goal.
Then more good work by Cook fashioned an opening for Blake who shot over Godwin's bar.

Moments later Rover's play-maker Webb could again consider himself unlucky, his rasping drive brilliantly saved by the Yachtsmen keeper
Hilton, diving full streach to deny the Webb a deserved goal.

Referee, Paul Quick would be the buffer of Webbs frustration, booking the Wakering No.7 for dissent.

On the hour Blake was caught by Rovers defender Sparrow and had to receive treatment. From the resulting free kick Lemmon delivered to Daniels who shot well wide.

Claudio Langlois replaced Blake for Wroxham around the hour mark, his first action would be to find his into Referee Quick's book.

Good work by Turner making a jinking run fed the ball to Langlois but the young Frenchman shot just wide of the Gt Wakering goal.

With 15mins of normal time to go Cook burst through the Rovers defence only to be hauled back by defender Hepburn. The Gt Wakering Mo.6 was shown the red card. Lemmon's free-kick shot straight at Godwin.

Halliday was replaced by Speller with time running down and he was immediately in the thick of the action, his well hit shot saved by
the Rovers stopper.

Wroxham Manager David Batch made his last change of the afternoon Durrant on for the hard working Turner.

With time running out it was Wroxham looking the more likely to score.

A good attacking run across the Wakering penalty area by Langois resulted in the youngster being fouled but Referee Quick played the Wroxham advantage as the ball found Speller who shot wide.
