Yachtswomen denied point by added time controversial offside decision.

Richard Giles13 May 2023 - 16:36

The Yachtswomen were beaten 2-1 at home to high-flying Stevenage this afternoon

It was the visitors who started on the front foot and Gowing was forced into action collecting a header from a Stevenage freekick.
In Wroxham’s only attack in the early stages, Catchpole was harsly adjudged offside from a pass down the left flank.
Although Stevenage were having majority of the play, they were yet to really test the home keeper, with the Wroxham back line resolute in their defending.
In a rare Wroxham attack, Catchpole threaded a ball through to Densley, but the ball ran out for a goal kick.
The last action of the half saw a lob from a Stevenage striker land on the top the net as the sides went into the break goalless.
Once again the early pressure of the new half came from the visitors. From a short corner a cross was missed by everybody, then a long ball to the right flank was cleared by Kett.
Wroxham made two changes in the early stages of the half with Olive and Walker entering the fray and it was the latter who fired just wide in Wroxham’s first attack.
As the half progressed, the host slowly started to match their opponents and with 15 minutes to go Catchpole was wrongly adjudged offside chasing a through ball.
With 6 minutes remaining, Wroxham stunned the visitors by taking the lead. Good play from Walker saw her fire the ball into the top corner after beating two defenders.
The lead lasted 4 minutes when Stevenage headed home a freekick before heartbreak for the hosts when the visitors scored a second 3 minutes into added time, after a freekick was awarded for offside against Catchpole who appeared Catchpole who appeared to be in her own half. Despite the protests from the home side and the Wroxham supporters the referee allowed the goal to stand.
Wroxham had barely kicked off when the referee blew for fulltime, and although the winner was a bitter pill to swallow, the young Yachtswomen can be proud of their performance against the second placed team in the league
