Wroxham made changes to the starting line up that faced St Ives 21 days before – Brogan Scully and Grace Squire made way for Naomi Cooper and Grace Birchall. Lynn’s changes from the 1-1 draw in the league match in November saw Alexa Hunter and Zara O’Neill make way for Kimberley Fairweather and Stephanie Powell.
The planned early kick-off was delayed by 19 minutes as the sides waited for the referee to arrive from officiating at an earlier fixture. Lynn kicked off the match attacking the Tennyson Road end under drizzle that had started an hour earlier and continued throughout the game.
Wroxham had the early opportunities with Becky Russell having the first shot, lofted from 30 yards. Lynn’s first attempt on goal came after 13 minutes. After losing possession from a free-kick in Lynn’s half, the hosts charge down their right saw a cross from near the goal line toed away at the edge of the 6 yard box by a Wroxham defender.
Wroxham’s goal came on 23 minutes. A hand-ball gave Wroxham a free-kick in their half. The ball was crossed diagonally for Birchall to pick up on the right and run on with and whose shot struck the underside of the bar on its way into the goal.
With Lynn behind, the half started to provide opportunities for Wroxham. Two minutes later a lobbed pass from just inside Wroxham’s half set Birchall free again to shoot past the keeper but was ruled out for being off-side by what must have been less than a millimetre.
Birchall was flagged offside two more times before the break but was also able to attempt a lob from distance.
Lynn’s best opportunity came after 35 minutes. A move down their right resulted in a speculative shot a few yards in from the touchline that required Hope Armstrong to stretch spectacularly to tip the ball onto the crossbar before it went over for a corner.
Half-time: KINGS LYNN TOWN 0, WROXHAM 1
Disruption to play through injuries meant the second half lasted 52 minutes.
As the half progressed, Lynn’s Rachel Skinner took on a prominent role in midfield acting as their playmaker and having several chances herself. Seven minutes in, a move down their left fed Skinner who pirouetted before striking a shot that was narrowly over the bar.
Three minutes later, Wroxham had a golden opportunity to make it two. A pass to Birchall on the left side generated a through ball for Holly Walker to shoot narrowly wide of an outstretched goalkeeper’s right post.
The first halt in play came after Tigi Robson had been injured in a tackle to concede a corner. Then Naomi Cooper was injured after clearing
the corner.
An unlucky bounce resulted in hand-ball providing Lynn with a free-kick. Skinner’s shot over the wall dipped but not enough to be on target.
Another freekick – this time because of Rebecca Russell tugging an opponent’s shirt in the Lynn half – saw a pass put Skinner through for another opportunity.
Challenges however were getting physical. 32 minutes in, Skinner showed another side to her game with a challenge on Zoe Cossey in front of the Wroxham bench that resulted in a four- minute delay. The referee took Skinner aside but did not feel the incident needed a red or yellow card. Meanwhile Cossey received treatment for her injury that was bad enough for her to be unable to continue the rest of the game.
At the start of added time a Wroxham break was stopped in order that a Lynn player could receive some treatment. The drop ball in Wroxham’s area lead to a move where Birchall was able to cut in from the left and shoot only to see her shot saved and the ball squirm over the crossbar.
