After a sequence of games with goals a plenty at Trafford Park, last night’s game was one where in the battle between defence and attack, defence clearly came out on top.
Wroxham started brightly and threatened down their left where interplay between Rio Abodunde and Jaoa Rangel caused the visitor’s defence some initial problems, however Rangel’s long range efforts were off target, and this rather set a pattern for the first half , where neither keeper was called upon to make more than a routine save.
It was thirty minutes, before Wroxham won their first corner, but were unable to fashion a goal scoring chance. Minutes later , returning to the side, defender Josh Hazell made a surging room through the Witham midfield and took aim from the edge of the Witham penalty area, but sadly his final shot went 9ver the bar.
At the start of the second half, both teams appeared to take off the hand brake and the game flowed from end to end, but defences stood firm, and in truth yellow cards exceeded goal scoring opportunities.
A corner looked Wroxham’s best chance of fashioning a breakthrough and on 70 minutes, the best chance from inside the penalty area arrived, but on this occasion, Josh Hazell couldn’t direct his header downwards, and the Witham defence survived.
In the closing stages the visitors decided to try their luck from distance but they found, Oli Sutton in the Yachtsmen’s goal in fine form as he tipped two goal bound efforts over the bar.
As a result of a number of substitutions and stoppages, the referee determined that there should be 7 additional minutes, but defences stood firm to ensure, the not very often seen,a goalless draw at Trafford Park.
In the circumstances the man of the match award was deservedly awarded to Wroxham’s central defender, Robbie Linford, seen here receiving his award, donated by @WoodfordesBrewery from Wroxham Chair, James Blower.
