Wroxham went eight wins from eight League games with a victory away at Ely City on Saturday. Joe Taylor continued his goal scoring start to the season netting all four goals within the first 46 minutes to see off any challenge from the home side.
Wroxham fielded a strong XI with no players absent from the squad due to the music festival near Norwich on Saturday. Ollie Sutton remained in goal, with Tom Huckerby, Chris Skipper, Travis Dodsworth and Wyatt Hill in defence. A midfield of Jordan King, Harley Black, Ryan Curtis and Brad Spooner with Ryan Miles and Joe Taylor up front. Waiting in reserve were Conley Poynter, Simon Lappin, Tom Matthews, Shaun Taylor and Ollie Yun to give manager Jordan Southgate opportunities to make changes in almost every position if required.
The Ely pitch was looking very dry in comparison with the trip to Lakenheath and Trafford Park and it was a talking point prior to kick-off as to how Wroxham would play their game.
It took the first 15 minutes of the game with both sides having half chances before any action of note. Ely had been either trying to unsettle the Yachtsmen defence by making long throws towards the penalty area or hitting the ball as far as they could out of the ground. Meanwhile, Wroxham had been trying to get down the wings to cross into the area without any real opportunity to shoot.
On 15 minutes, Wroxham took the lead with the first of the afternoon from Joe Taylor. A long ball out of defence by Wroxham was misjudged by the Ely defender and Taylor was able to steal in and finish low past the keeper to delight from the travelling Blue Wave. Whilst it was not the best goal created recently, it was a finish that Taylor has become renowned for.
This stunned Ely into attack and Luke Young's shot was beaten away by Ollie Sutton. This gave Ely confidence and following some ping-pong in the Wroxham area, Sutton was again called into action, catching easily.
On 30 minutes, it was 2-0 to Wroxham and an almost carbon copy goal. A ball by Brad Spooner from his own half to Joe Taylor and after advancing towards goal, he fired past Harry Reynolds in the home goal.
As half-time approached, Wroxham were looking to make it three. Ryan Miles had a shot blocked away for a corner and Brad Spooner saw a shot just wide of the post. It didn't take long following this for Joe Taylor to get his second hat-trick of the season for the club. Ryan Curtis collected a poor pass from Ely in midfield and was advancing towards the goal. On seeing Taylor making a forward run, his pass was precise and Taylor slotted past the keeper to make it 3-0 at half-time to the League leaders.
With the half-time break an opportunity for Ely to change their way of playing, it was unfortunate for them that within a minute of the restart, Wroxham had made it 4-0. Brad Spooner had a shot blocked by Reynolds but it fell perfectly for Joe Taylor who fired his and Wroxham's fourth through a group of players into the net.
The Yachtsmen weren't looking to take their foot off the accelerator and Spooner was close to making it five but for Reynolds saving with his legs. Reynolds was fortunate and had his defence to thank for clearing a Curtis shot off the line later on.
Jordan Southgate decided to throw on fresh legs with Conley Poynter, Tom Matthews and Simon Lappin all making an appearance for Travis Dodsworth, Wyatt Hill and Brad Spooner.
Ely continued to press and had half-chances for Jordan Foster and Jamie Baxter but there was no way past the Wroxham defence.
On 90 minutes, Harley Black tried an audacious attempt to catch out the Ely keeper with a shot from distance but as the ball sailed over the bar, referee Willem Perry brought the game to a close.
Wroxham now have a chance to avenge their FA Cup defeat against Mildenhall on Saturday at Trafford Park and to continue their 100% league performance.
